Green Campus Initiatives

TASIS is working toward promoting environmental sustainability and minimizing waste. The School continues to explore and implement improvements in the management of resources and its facilities.

Electrical power supply
  • In 2012, TASIS began redesigning and unifying the campus's electrical power supply source with an expected savings of between 40-50 percent.
  • TASIS received Swiss Hydro Certification in July 2013. This means that all power to TASIS comes exclusively from renewable hydroelectric power (Swiss rivers and lakes).
  • The School installed a centralized power equalization system that efficiently redistributes power usage to cut down on peak consumption times.
  • The School has modified the Ammeter values of each building.
Geothermal heating

All campus buildings built since 2006 draw heat from the ground. The School has achieved increased energy efficiency through geothermal heating with a 32:100 input-output ratio (an input of 32 in electrical energy and an output of 100 in thermal energy after the fluid is pumped in geothermal probes.)

Organic waste, low "food miles," and recycling
  • 90 percent of organic waste from TASIS's kitchens is recycled. 
  • TASIS purchased the revolutionary Shubic food waste processing system, which converts wet food waste to a dry byproduct that can then be used as a soil enhancer for landscaping. Employees have complimentary access to this compost, and the School sells the excess to local gardening companies.
  • All disposable paper plates, cups, and cutlery are made of recyclable, biodegradable materials.
  • TASIS's chef endeavors to purchase products with low "food miles." Items from the local Swiss market are favored, reducing the number of items brought in from other countries. 
Electric Vehicles

TASIS has a small fleet of electric vehicles and plans to acquire more to replace its older internal combustion vehicles.


TASIS is moving toward better energy conservation by doing the following:

  • Insulating campus buildings for heat conservation
  • Replacing one-pane windows with multiple-pane windows and adding efficient, heat-insulating walls in all campus renovation projects
  • Completing the installation of light-timer switches to conserve electricity wherever possible
  • Adding LED lightbulbs around campus where possible
Solar Energy

In line with the TASIS Global Village, which places sustainable development at the forefront, the School is planning on building a solar-powered path; the path will utilize revolutionary floor tile technology.

Colored solar panels from CSEM are also planned for future campus development.


TASIS is committed to educating its students about energy conservation, which is a part of the curriculum.
