A Joyous Holiday Season at TASIS
Posted 12/18/2017 09:00AM

TASIS opened the holiday season with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the TASIS Parent Association (TPA) Holiday Market on the afternoon of December 1. Students and faculty members sang several carols to a crowd that gathered around the well-decorated tree, and guests spent the rest of the chilly afternoon browsing the Christmas gift stands inside the Palmer Center and purchasing handmade crafts, holiday cards, baked goods, and other treats from the outdoor tables run by the High School's Service Learning Program groups. Thanks to the TPA, many student and faculty volunteers, and a supportive community, the event raised more than CHF 3300 for the Service Learning Program!

In addition to the great video created by School Photographer Kim Nelson above, student filmmaker Karen Corda '18 put together this quick look at the Holiday Market:

Christmas Service

The annual All-School Christmas Service was celebrated at the church of San Nicolao della Flüe on the afternoon of Sunday, December 10. High School History Department Chair Dr. Thomas Mauro, Caterina Millo '22 and Ana Beatriz Ribeiro Moritz Calvacanti '25, Lauren Riba '19, Headmaster Christopher Nikoloff, and Chairman of the Board Lynn Fleming Aeschliman delivered the service's readings while Don Marco Dania presented the Invocation and Benediction. High School Music Director Samantha Forrest directed the excellent musical program in collaboration with Middle School Choir Director Sarah Grove Locke, Elementary School Choir Director Melody Zanecchia, Faculty Choir Director Tamara Schumacher, and accompanists Jonathan Morris and Gloria De Piante Vicin.

The year's first real snow began falling during the Christmas Service and continued sporadically for the next 36 hours, blanketing the campus for the final week of classes. Students enjoyed sledding down the hill in front of the outdoor theater, building snow forts, and having good-natured snowball fights for the remainder of the week.

In the weeks leading up to the Christmas Holiday, Elementary School students decorated their classrooms, enjoyed many special holiday events in their classes, spent some time with Santa Claus and Mrs. Clause on campus, and presented a Drama Workshop in the Palmer Center. They also worked very hard to prepare for the annual Elementary School Christmas Concert, which was held in the Palestra on the morning of December 15.

Music Director Melody Zanecchia and the Elementary School Christmas Band—Gloria De Piante Vicin and Stefano Marinucci—did an outstanding job guiding the enthusiastic student musicians through a delightful lineup of holiday classics. Enjoy a photo gallery from the concert, see the program, and watch the performance in full below.

The Middle School Theater Club presented its Drama Workshop in the Palmer Center on the evening of December 7, and the Middle School Christmas Celebration, which included a formal dinner followed by dancing and games, was held on campus on December 9. The High School enjoyed a Christmas-themed Family-style Advisor Dinner in De Nobili on December 13.

The TASIS Faculty and Staff celebrated the holidays in a number of ways, including the Egg Nog Christmas Party in Casa Fleming on December 6, the TPA Faculty and Staff Panettone on December 7, and the formal Faculty Christmas Dinner in De Nobili on December 15. Faculty members continued another annual tradition by serenading the personale with Christmas carols during their lunch break on December 13.

The Winter Holiday officially began on the afternoon of December 15, and classes will resume on Monday, January 8. We wish everyone a safe and restful holiday!
