Exciting New Library Resource to Greatly Benefit TASIS Students

TASIS’s continuing academic mission is to provide a relevant, challenging curriculum to its students—and to present that curriculum in an engaging, comprehensive manner. To that end, History Department Chair and High School Librarian Tom Mauro, High School Theater Director Valerie B. Carlson, and High School English Department Chair Dr. Chris Love have collaborated to bring an exciting new resource to TASIS Middle and High School students via the H. Miller Crist Library: Digital Theatre Plus, a 21st-century educational library of classic and contemporary plays, literary theory and criticism, theater history, and interviews with theater practitioners.

“Three million students, at over 1400 academic institutions, in 80+ countries have unlimited access to some of the world's finest productions, unique backstage insights, practitioner interviews and written analysis,” states the Digital Theatre Plus website—and now TASIS will be amongst them.

All Middle and High School teachers—in all subjects—will have unlimited access to the hundreds of videos, articles, and study guides provided with the subscription—many of them specifically created for and geared toward IB and AP subjects, and many useful for such subjects as diverse as Science, History, Music, and Theory of Knowledge (TOK), as well as Theater and English. Teacher access begins June 1, and students will be able to use the site immediately upon their return to school in the fall via a link on the Library page of the TASIS website.

“With access to the Digital Theatre’s archives, interviews, and other materials, students in the English Department will read plays not only as texts, but also as means by which to bring art alive on stage,” said Dr. Love. “Gaining knowledge and insight from directors, actors, and other theater practitioners, TASIS students will be inspired to engage texts in a more collaborative and artistic mode.”

Dr. Love is not alone in this evaluation. Libby Tilley, Head of Arts and Humanities Libraries and the English Faculty Librarian at the University of Cambridge in the UK, writes, “We chose Digital Theatre Plus to provide access to theatre productions for our students. The additional information offered through study guides and interviews is a bonus for those doing Performance or Shakespeare courses. The difference screening live performances makes is enormous, and it is worth the investment to get this level of quality.”

“Much as the Elementary School uses the Core Knowledge curriculum to make connections and deepen understanding for their students across disciplines, upper school teachers will be able to use Digital Theatre Plus’s resources to apply that cross-curricular mindset in their courses,” said Ms. Carlson, who teaches both theater and the IB’s Theory of Knowledge course. “For example, there is a selection of plays that delve into ethics surrounding advances in science and medicine. Naturally, these kind of cross-overs are also perfect material for use in the IB’s TOK course, which has as its intention an exploration of knowledge in overlapping and individual subject areas. I can’t wait to start using these plays and all the corresponding support materials with my students!”
