What we are doing, or at least attempting to do, is to create not international schools but international human beings, men and women who are capable of moving easily in any society and any civilization on the face of the earth, people who do not have to overcome the barriers of prejudice or even unfamiliarity in communicating with their fellow human beings, no matter what their backgrounds.

- M. Crist Fleming (1993 speech)

Academic Awards Assembly

Congratulations to all students recognized at the Academic Awards Assembly on the morning of Thursday, February 7. A total of 35 students (pictured above) earned the designation of Highest Honors for posting a GPA of 3.80 or greater in the Fall Semester!

Academic Dean Dr. Mark Abisi also noted that 65 students achieved High Honors (at least a 3.50 GPA), 92 students earned Honors (at least a 3.20 GPA), 69 students were named to the High Dean’s List (effort mark of 4.50 or higher, no unexcused absences, no major school rule violations, and approval of both the faculty and administration), and 142 students were named to the Dean’s List (effort mark of 4.0 or higher, no more than one unexcused absence, and no major school rule violations).

How to Report Absences at the Moment

We are currently having a technical issue with the Attendance and Transportation Request function in the Veracross Parent Portal. We expect this problem to be resolved soon, but in the meantime please email Mr. McKee or Ms. Abisi to notify the High School of any absences.

Once Veracross is back up and running, please be advised that only parents of day students can excuse their children through the Parent Portal for illnesses and doctor visits.

If you are the parent of a boarding student and your child has signed out to stay with you and is unable to make it to school due to illness, please send an email to Mr. McKee or Ms. Abisi.

Student Activities Offered this Weekend

This weekend’s activities include a movie night in the Snack Bar on Friday evening, a skiing/cross country skiing/snowshoeing trip to Splügen or a trip to Ponte Tresa for sushi on Saturday, and a hike up Monte Boglia or Valentine’s Day card-making and snacks in De Nobili on Sunday. Students should consult the HS Daily Bulletin for more details.

International Week Starts on Monday!

International Week 2019 will open on Monday, February 11, and conclude on Friday, February 15. The week will include special events in all three divisions, including the all-school Parade of Flags, the Elementary School's International Showcase, the MS/HS World Cup Tournaments, and the High School International Food Fair.

The week will kick off with the Parade of Flags Assembly on Monday morning. This exciting event will be filmed and posted on the TASIS YouTube channel later that day. Due to very limited space in the Palestra, parents are kindly asked not to attend.

During this morning’s Advisor meeting, students discussed their plans and expectations for International Week. In next week’s meeting, groups will reflect upon the difference between nationalism and internationalism.

Graduation attire will be checked on Wednesday, April 10. We ask all seniors to have their graduation attire ready by that time.

Mariko has a great attitude and showed tremendous perseverance during the early weeks of Varsity Girls Basketball. She continues to improve her game by being consistent and demonstrating commitment and passion during all games and practices. Mariko is an ideal example for her teammates because of what she brings on and off the court. She works hard, is tireless on defense, and is a very smart offensive player. Congratulations, Mariko!

Minjoon Seo ’19
Minjoon is one of the most committed and dedicated athletes on the Varsity Badminton team. He comes to practices ready to push himself and is a great role model for the younger players. Minjoon’s skills have improved throughout the season, and he is now playing at an elite/club level. He’s able to execute plays and move swiftly with ease on the court. TASIS To Offer CILS Exams This Spring

Dear Parents,

In our ongoing effort to broaden the academic opportunities for our students, this year we will offer Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language (CILS) exams on May 30. The CILS Diploma, issued by the University for Foreigners of Siena, certifies that a student's knowledge of Italian is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)—the international standard for assessing language ability. The certification is valid throughout the world and does not expire.

We recommend that Italian Section students who are not mother-tongue Italian speakers take this exam. In order to organize the logistics of the exam administrations, we need to know how many students are interested. If you think you would like your son or daughter to take any of the exams, please send me an email at nilda.lucchini@tasis.ch.

Please take note of the following dates:

  • Thursday, February 21: Mock exams administered at TASIS (no cost)
  • Thursday, March 21: Registration deadline for official CILS exams
  • Thursday, May 30: official CILS exams administered at TASIS
    • Level A1 & A2 (CHF 120)
    • Level B1 (CHF 170)
    • Level B2 (CHF 200)
    • Level C1 (CHF 230)

Thank you for your time, and please feel free to email me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Nilda Lucchini
Chair of the Modern Languages Department
