Spring Arts Festival Now Under Way!

The 45th annual TASIS Spring Arts Festival officially opened this morning with a kickoff event in the Monticello Piazza, and the action continues with a percussion showcase in the Palestra Snack Bar at 16:00 this afternoon and student band performances in the same location at 20:00 this evening. All are welcome to join us at these exciting events!

The action will resume on Tuesday, May 14, with the festival continuing through the evening of Sunday, May 19. All members of the TASIS community and the general public are cordially invited to campus to enjoy concerts, theatrical performances, dance performances, film screenings, visual arts exhibitions, guest lectures, art workshops, and more.

Alternate schedules next week: Due to events related to the Spring Arts Festival and MS Musical, we will be running alternate schedules on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14–15. Please see the schedules below.

Summer Reading Lists from the EAL and English Departments and the Italian Section will be shared next week.

MS Summer Learning Resources: We realize that many of you would like to keep your children engaged in their learning process throughout the summer. In order to help support this effort, every year the Middle School puts together a list of recommended resources that you can consider when trying to engage your child in the different disciplines they encounter throughout the school year. This list will be shared next week.

MAP testing
The Middle School has started our Spring MAP testing. MAP assessment comes from Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), a US educational organization. The MAP tests allow us to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year—and from year to year—in the areas of Reading, Language Usage, and Mathematics. Individual MAP reports will be sent home in early June, and please note that these tests have no effect on your child's grades.

Students will take the three subject tests on three separate days. If your child is absent on one of his or her testing days, we will arrange times for make-up tests.

Testing began last week with EAL classes, and Math 2, 3, 4, and 5 classes followed this week. English classes will be taking the Reading and Language Usage next week. Your child's teacher will provide the specific dates.

Testing days should be no different than any other school day. Since each MAP test is individually tailored for each child, there is no way to study for the test. To best prepare, your child should SIMPLY make sure to do the following:

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Have a nutritious breakfast
  • Come to school with a positive attitude

Advanced German Class: Educational and Cultural Activities

Hermann Hesse Museum: On Thursday, April 11, the Advanced MS German group visited the Hermann Hesse Museum. They enjoyed a guided tour in German, which gave them the opportunity to learn more about the artist's love of nature, art, and writing. Since the Advanced German B1 course aims to broaden students' cultural knowledge around the German language, this local outing provided a perfect opportunity for learning.

Berlin Trip: The Advanced German class is currently visiting Berlin on a cultural immersion trip (May 9–11). They will be using their language skills in this international city and visiting world-famous cultural and historical sights, such as the Unesco-protected Museum Island, the Reichstag dome, Alexanderplatz, and Checkpoint Charlie.

MS Assemblies and Advisor Meetings

Wednesday’s assembly was devoted to MS Service Learning. The Personale Appreciation, Poverty Awareness, and World Issues Service Learning groups shared information about their recent activities and projects.

During Assembly on Thursday, May 9, the MS After-School Program Spring Term Awards Ceremony was held. Congratulations to the award recipients!

After-School Sports and Activities

The MS Girls Volleyball team will participate in the NISSA Championships at SE (Milan) on Saturday, May 11. The team will depart at 8:00 and return around 15:30.

The MS Track & Field team will participate in an invitational tournament at Inter-Community School in Zurich (ICSZ) on Friday, May 24.

The Spring After-School Sports and Activities Term concludes today, May 10.

  • MS Football/Soccer Boys (competitive) – Monday and Wednesday, 16:00-17:30
  • MS Football/Soccer Girls (competitive) – Monday 16:00-18:00 and Wednesday, 16:00-17:30
  • JV Girls Volleyball, with HS girls (competitive) – Monday/Thursday, 16:00-17:30; Tuesday 17:30-19:00; must come to practice at least twice a week
  • MS Boys and Girls Cross Country – Monday and Wednesday, 16:00-17:30
  • MS Lacrosse Boys – Monday, 17:30-18:30
  • MS Cheerleading – Wednesday, 16:00-17:30

Sketch Opens Next Friday!

Violet is thirteen, bookish, and an outcast among her peers. She spends her school days ducking insults and dreaming up villainous alter-egos for her classmates and teachers. When the bullies who have plagued her for years discover her artistic talents, they convince her that sketching parodies of students and teachers is a victimless crime. Will she learn to use her powers only for good and become the hero of her own story?

Featuring an all-star cast of Middle School students, Sketch will open in the Palmer Center at 19:00 on Friday, May 17, and will also be performed May 18 at 19:00 and May 19 at 13:00.

The Prince and the Pauper Premieres on May 28

Tom Canty and Prince Edward are born on the same day to two very different families in two very different parts of London. Tom, poor and unwanted by his family, is raised in the slums of Offal Court, where he dreams of being a Prince. Edward, drowning in the power and riches of royalty, dreams of what life might be like outside the castle walls. One day, the two look-alike boys meet and decide to swap places and experience life from a different perspective. Both learn valuable lessons throughout their respective journeys in this Mark Twain masterpiece about truth and mercy.

This version of The Prince and the Pauper was adapted by Stephanie Figer, Michael Rosenbaum, and TJ Liquori and will be directed by Mr. and Mrs. Matthew and Julie Frazier-Smith. The enthusiastic cast of Elementary School students can’t wait to showcase its talents in the Palmer Center at 19:00 on Tuesday, May 28, and at 19:00 on Wednesday, May 29.

MS Yearbook Distribution

MS Yearbook Distribution will take place on Monday, June 3, during our Farewell Assembly.

8th Grade Moving-Up Ceremony

The MS Moving-Up Ceremony for 8th-grade students and their parents will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 4.

On Tuesday, June 4, from 8:00–11:30, there will be a Moving-Up Ceremony rehearsal in the Palmer Center. It is required for all 8th graders.

Students must bring their complete outfits to school (including shoes) for the dress check that will take place on Thursday, May 16:

  • Girls from 15:00–15:50 in Belvedere Salon
  • Boys from 15:25–15:50 in Belvedere Inner

First “Grill and Chill” a Huge Success!

Electronic Devices on Shuttle Buses

Please note that the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices is not permitted at meals or in the classroom (unless the teacher grants permission for academic purposes). We have recently been made aware of some unfortunate behavior with electronic devices on our shuttles buses—including the playing of inappropriate music/video content at loud volumes—and would like to limit the use of these devices on the rides to and from school, which we consider to be an extension of the school day.

We understand that students may occasionally need to send a quick message home, and that kind of behavior remains acceptable. But we no longer want students to use their devices to play music or videos that other students can hear, take photos or videos of other students, or carry out any other form of inappropriate behavior. Our drivers have been instructed to take devices if they spot this kind of behavior.

We thank you for understanding and ask that you please have a quick conversation with your children to help us enforce this message.
