Mrs. Fleming had a vision that we could bring students from around the world and have a wonderful, beautiful community and make the world a better place. You are a part of that. You are her vision, and you’re making that happen every day.

– Headmaster Christopher Nikoloff at yesterday’s Founder’s Day Assembly

If I stand on my mountaintop and look down at the last ninety years—or if I look up—outward and up at the next 90 years, what do I see? This is what I hope to see: TASIS bursting at the seams with very special young people, from all over the world, preparing themselves for leadership roles in their own countries, where they will strive to eliminate poverty, hunger, disease, exploitation, injustice, and war!

– TASIS Founder M. Crist Fleming’s Yearbook message in 2000

Founder’s Day Assembly and Class Outings

TASIS held a special assembly yesterday afternoon to celebrate the incredible life of international education pioneer M. Crist Fleming, who overcame many obstacles to found the School in 1956 and nurture it to greatness. The inspiring assembly, which can be viewed in full below, included engaging remarks from Headmaster Christopher Nikoloff and a number of excellent presentations and musical performances designed to highlight Mrs. Fleming’s love of learning languages and conviction that TASIS would, well beyond her own lifetime, “continue to bring young people of the world together with a shared vision that the world is really one big family, that no matter what our color, race, or creed, we are all part of the human species, we are all human beings.”

Following the assembly, students and faculty members moved to the MCF Piazza to enjoy cake and the time-honored Founder’s Day tradition of tossing yellow rose petals into Mrs. Fleming’s fountain.

How to Request Tutoring

Families seeking additional academic support for their children may want to consider requesting a tutor. The TASIS Tutoring Parent Authorization Form can be accessed directly at tasis.ch/tutor. You will be prompted to enter your Veracross username and password and will be taken directly to the form once you do so.

Once received, we will try our very best to find the right tutor for your son or daughter, but please be aware that due to changes in schedules and tutor availability throughout the year, it may not always be possible to find a tutor immediately—or at all in some cases.

If you or your son or daughter would like to discuss tutoring needs in person, please contact Tutoring Coordinator Stephanie Chevalier at tutoring@tasis.ch to schedule an appointment.

EAL Film Project

EAL Film Program for Introduction to MS Academic English class (Mrs. Guarnieri Rosso’s class):

Our Middle School EAL Film Program is part of the EAL Beginner curriculum. Mrs. Guarnieri Rosso’s students in the Introduction to MS Academic English class are required to follow this program outside of regular academic hours. This project has been designed to provide students the opportunity to learn English through the analysis of film while being guided by expert faculty. We have planned activities related to the three films using iPads, group work, discussions, and games. These activities will help students understand the underlying linguistic and cultural messages in the films and improve their English. Students must attend the following film sessions this year:

  • November 15–16 (Film: A Christmas Carol)
    • Friday, 15:30–17:30
    • Saturday, 10–12
  • January 31 - February 1 (Film: Hugo Cabret or Heidi)
    • Friday, 15:30–17:30
    • Saturday, 10–12
  • March 27-28 (Film: Alice in Wonderland)
    • Friday, 15:30–17:30
    • Saturday, 10–12

MS Attendance

To inform the school of an absence (for the full academic day, single classes, or after-school activities), please go to the Student Attendance & Transportation Request area of the Veracross Parent Portal as soon as possible and provide details of the absence. Please be specific, make sure to choose the correct date, and always provide the reason. An absence may only be excused by the School, which reserves the right to determine whether an absence is excused or unexcused.

If you have any questions regarding the attendance records or need assistance in reporting the absence in Veracross, contact ms.attendance@tasis.ch.

Email Communication between Teachers and Parents Through Veracross

Please note that the Veracross system allows teachers to send messages to parents through its portal. Often these messages have an email address that looks something like m.@mail2.veracross.com. If you receive an email with such an address, you may use the “Reply” feature to write back to the teacher. But please know that this email address is system-generated and is only valid when you are using the “Reply” function. If you save this address as a contact (or if your iPhone automatically does this), it will not work if you use it to send a new email.

If you need to write a new email to a teacher (meaning you are not replying to an email already sent to you), please check to make sure you are sending the email to the teacher’s TASIS address. The standard format for a TASIS email account is firstname.lastname@tasis.ch, and you can always refer to the Faculty and Staff directory if you’re unsure.

Save the Date: Autumn Aperitifs on October 10
