Event Recap:

Girls Doubles = Champions
Boys Doubles = 2nd Place
Mixed Doubles = 2nd Place

On Saturday, January 26, the Varsity Badminton team competed in the first championship tournament of the year: the SGIS Doubles Championships. Led by captains Maria Veronica Ramos '19 and Minjoon Seo '19, TASIS pushed through some tough matches to claim the championship trophy for the girls and the runners-up trophies for the boys and the mixed doubles categories.

Recaps for each tournament comprised several very composed girls doubles teams. Ramos and Margarita Ukleina '19 (TASIS #1 pair) swept through the group matches with only one loss to their own teammates, Yuka Tanaka '21 and Elia Sato '21. Ramos and Ukleina reached the championship match with a lot confidence, but unfortunately they were unable to settle down and launch a comeback after falling behind. Their ICSZurich opponents were on target and made the most out of their opponents' miscues. Nonetheless, Ramos and Ukleina medaled for the first of the season. More impressively, Tanaka and Sato played up and used some very smart and consistent strategies that not only earned them their first medal ever but also helped the Tigers secure the Girls Team Championship!

In the boys tournament, the Tigers came out sluggish and suffered some tough and very close losses. Deflated, they had to work their way out of many deficits. Some of the Tiger teams prevailed and came through while most were deflated and had a difficult time moving past their mistakes. The TASIS #1 team of Matt Meng '21 and Seo was one of the teams that got off to a slow start but was able to fight its way back—eventually losing in the semifinals but winning the bronze medal. On the other hand, the Tigers #2 team, Giulio Bianco '21 and Adriano Condulmari '22, stayed strong and worked together to reach the semifinals before losing to teammates Meng and Seo.

There were many lessons learned from this first championship tournament. The Tigers have a lot of potential and are ready for the next opportunity to prove that their hard work and dedication will lead to more wins. The team will host the NISSA Badminton Singles Championship in the Palestra on February 5 at 15:00. Go Tigers!
