Event Recap:SGIS Cat. B Results
Finishing the season on a high note was one of the objectives for the TASIS Varsity Boys Rugby 7s Team at the SGIS Rugby 7s Tournament in Le Rosey on November 11. Another objective was to improve upon the last-place finish at the ISSL Tournament in Zurich a month earlier, which had driven a focus on training on rucking, tackling, and teamwork. The team was also hungry for its first victory of the season.
The first game was the morning wakeup against ISZL, eventual runners-up in the tournament, who shot to a 4-point lead before a rousing but late response by TASIS that included some great runs by Artyom Yakushenko ’20 and two tries by Pablo Rivero Dominguez ’20 that resulted from some great reading of the opposition. The game finished 4-3. Game two, a reality check against the eventual tournament winners, resulted in a 4-0 defeat. Finally it came in game three—the first victory of the season against Le Chat, as TASIS won 3-1 with Juan Pablo Jaspeado Villanueva ’20 scoring all three tries from a number of very strong individual runs. Game four continued the winning streak against the hosts Le Rosey with a 4-1 victory, with tries coming from Omar Rahal ’20, two from Nicolas Brinkmann ’20, and yet another from Juan Pablo Jaspeado Villanueva ’20. As the rain started to come down and fatigue set in, TASIS was caught off guard by an under-strength LGB team that, despite having to borrow a player, managed of beat TASIS 5-2. Tries for TASIS were from Ryoma Ikeda ’21 and Kazu Nakanishi ’20. The final game of the afternoon was a well-fought 0-0 draw against CDL in which Juan Pablo Jaspeado Villanueva ’20 yet again worked hard in putting in some great tackles and runs. TASIS finished on a high with a 4th-place overall finish in the tournament.
