Sweet November Dance Company (SNDC) unveiled six original pieces of choreography in front of a full house in the Palmer Center on the evening of November 27. Led by theater and dance teacher Ms. Julie Frazier-Smith, whose lifelong love of dance inspired her to found SNDC in the fall of 2017, the company’s latest outstanding performance follows its debut concert last November and a dance showcase at the 2018 Spring Arts Festival.

The theme of this year’s fall concert was Creative Seeds. In her director’s note, Ms. Frazier-Smith drew upon bestselling author C.J. Lyons’ definition of creativity—“living in possibility and abundance rather than limitation and scarcity”—and educator Stephanie Huckestein’s definition of a seed—“a young plant that is resting inside a protective coating until the conditions are right for it to grow into a plant”—as she encouraged the audience members to reflect upon their own powers to create.

“Each piece of choreography this evening is original,” Ms. Frazier-Smith explained to the audience before the concert began. “Each piece simply began as a thought (seed). After much care and tending by the choreographers and dancers, tonight you are witnessing that seed bloom into a reality. This evening, we invite you to think about your creative seeds. What would you like to nurture in your creative life? What nutrients are necessary for that growth?”

SNDC is made up of TASIS High School students who dedicate their Sunday afternoons to learning company ensemble works from tap to contemporary dance numbers. This year’s fall concert included both faculty-choreographed and student-choreographed works with live and recorded accompaniment. In the heartwarming finale, the company was joined on stage by tap dancers from the TASIS Faculty and from Al Focolare, the TASIS Elementary School’s Early Childhood Center.

The inspiring performance can be viewed in full below.
