Alumni and Friends Basque Country Hike | June 10-19, 2018
Spend ten days discovering the beautiful French Pays Basque in the extreme southwest of the country. Less known and traveled than other parts of la belle France, the itinerary will take us through an exquisite emerald land of foothills flowing down to the sea, dotted with charming whitewashed villages and speckled with grazing sheep and wild ponies. One high point (literally) will be the ascent by cog railway to the 2700-foot La Rhune peak, which will deliver a breathtaking panorama of the Bay of Biscay coast.
The hike will start in little Biriatou on the Atlantic and proceed eastwards, shadowing the Spanish border and ending in St. Jean Pied-de-Port, France's jumping off point for the famed Saint Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrimage trek across northern Spain. The walking is of moderate difficulty with a daily average of four trail hours, and a sag wagon will be available to facilitate anyone who wants a respite on any given day.
Accommodation is in charming 2- to 4-star inns with outstanding cuisine and renowned chefs, a few with swimming pools.
Once again, our expert organizer is Peter Boynton '69, who knows this area intimately and who will lead this trip along with a staff of three further guides.
Full details of the trip and day-by-day itineraries are available from Peter on request. Questions? Contact Peter for these too, tel. +1 831 747 0196.
