Oliver Performed

The Spring Musical is always a highlight every year. Students, faculty and friends will often attend the musical more than once in order to spend an evening being entertained. Oliver! is the musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic tale of an orphan who runs away from the orphanage and hooks up with a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by an elderly mentor, Fagin. Oliver Twist is sold to an undertaker after asking for more dinner at the orphanage. Escaping to London he is taken in by Fagin to join his gang of child pickpockets. Wrongly accused of a theft, he meets a more kindly gentleman who takes him in, much to the concern of one of Fagin's old pupils, the violent Bill Sykes. In the middle is Nancy, Sykes' girl whom Oliver has come to trust.

The TASIS cast of Oliver! included students, faculty and staff. Cathy Lemmon stepped in to direct this play since TASIS Director of Theater, Kay Hamlin, was recovering from surgery. It was not a small task to organize and channel the energies of twenty plus students and their busy schedules. Once the play began on Monday night, the cast rose to the challenge and no one was disappointed by the performances. It was great to see many students new to the theater taking a chance and actually singing in front of their friends and teachers.
